Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) Operations and Troubleshooting Course
The Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) Operation and Troubleshooting Course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles, components, and operation of the BWTS system used for disinfecting ballast water. The course covers the fundamental principles of the system, including the functions and operations of its various components. Additionally, the course aims to prepare learners to identify and troubleshoot likely faults that may arise in the BWTS system’s different components.
Program Objectives:
- Explaining the basic principles of BWTS in disinfecting ballast water.
- Discussing the function and working of the various components of the BWTS system.
- Interpreting the P & I diagram and understanding the operation of the system.
- Identifying likely faults and troubleshoot problems that could occur with the various components of the BWTS system.
- Demonstrating steps for logging data in the BWTS system.

Mr. Hoshang Dastur
With over four decades of distinguished experience in the maritime industry, Mr. Hoshang J. Dastur is a seasoned marine engineer, trainer, and leader dedicated to advancing maritime education and professional development. A graduate of Mazagon Docks Limited, Bombay, where he completed a rigorous four-year Marine Engineering Apprenticeship, Mr. Dastur has combined extensive sea-going experience with more than two decades of excellence in maritime training and management.
He began his seafaring career in 1984, steadily rising through the engineering ranks to attain the position of Chief Engineer by the time he left sea service in 1999. During his sailing career, he earned two prestigious licenses – M.O.T. Class 1 (Motor) from the Government of India and Class 1 (Steam) from the Government of Liberia – reflecting his exceptional technical competence and mastery of marine engineering systems.
Transitioning ashore, Mr. Dastur briefly served as Acting Technical Superintendent at Barber Ship Management, Dubai, where he oversaw vessel operations and supported fleet technical management. In 1999, he joined the International Maritime Training Centre (IMTC), marking the beginning of a remarkable 22-year tenure that shaped the training landscape for countless marine professionals.
At IMTC, Mr. Dastur held several key leadership positions, including Superintendent & Company Training Officer for Barber Ship Management, responsible for the recruitment, training, and mentoring of Trainee and Junior Engineers. As Head of the Department (Engineering Studies), he spearheaded the development, delivery, and continual improvement of all engineering and technical training programs. His vision and leadership culminated in his appointment as Head of IMTC (2014–2021), where he successfully guided the institute’s strategic growth, course expansion, and quality enhancement until his retirement in December 2021.
Mr. Dastur’s professional qualifications are complemented by specialized courses in Training for Trainers (Administration Approved) and Shipping Management at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, underscoring his commitment to educational excellence and managerial competence.
Today, Mr. Dastur continues to contribute to the maritime industry as an Independent Trainer, Consultant, and Visiting Faculty, offering his expertise to enhance technical proficiency, leadership, and operational excellence within the maritime sector
