Bridge Team Resource Management Course (BTRM)
The Bridge Team Resource Management course (BTRM Course) at ISF Maritime & Offshore Institute (IMOI), Mumbai, is a 5-day intensive training program complying with IMO Model Course 1.22. Available both online and in a physical classroom, this course equips deck officers and masters with the skills to manage bridge team resources effectively — ensuring navigational safety in all conditions. Training is conducted using ARI Cloud Simulators, giving participants hands-on simulator experience without needing to travel.

5-Day Bridge Team Resource Management Course Structure
- Day 1 — Ship Handling Fundamentals Ship handling and manoeuvring principles (engines, helm, bow/stern thrusters). IMO passage planning guidelines overview.
- Day 2 — Environmental & Shallow Water Effects Ship behaviour due to wind and current (varying displacement conditions). Shallow water effects: Squat calculation, vessel interaction, bank effect.
- Day 3 — Bridge Procedures & Resource Management Utilising all bridge resources for enhanced navigational safety (normal and emergency). Communication within bridge team. Situational awareness and error trapping.
- Day 4 — Passage Planning & Human Element Planning and executing detailed passage plans per company procedures and IMO guidelines. Optimum use of bridge resources — Human Element focus: personnel, equipment & procedures. Building a shared mental model.
- Day 5 — Emergency Manoeuvres & Simulator Exercises Slow speed control and stopping manoeuvres including crash astern. Emergency navigation scenarios on ARI Simulator. Final assessment and certification.

Upon successful completion of this 5-day programme, participants receive a certificate from IMOI (ISF Group). No. BTRM at IMOI is a Value-Added Course and is not a DG Shipping mandatory approved course. However, it meets the requirements of IMO Model Course 1.22 and is recognised for TMSA, SIRE 2.0, and RightShip RISQ compliance.

What is the difference between BTM and BTRM?
BTM (Bridge Team Management) focuses primarily on team dynamics and communication. BTRM (Bridge Team Resource Management) is broader — it includes all BTM content plus ship handling, manoeuvring, simulator exercises, and human element training per IMO Model Course 1.22.
What documents are required for the BTRM course?
Participants need to submit copies of their valid Nautical CoC (Certificate of Competency), Passport, and CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate).

Capt. Devendra Kishore
Capt. Devendra Kishore is a distinguished Master Mariner with over 40 years of extensive experience in both seafaring and maritime education. A graduate of the prestigious T.S. Rajendra (1978–79), he began his career with the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) and went on to command various vessels across the globe. He holds a Master (F.G.) License (upgraded to STCW 2010), a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a Fellowship Diploma in Shipping Management from NMISM Mumbai, alongside certifications as a TOTA, AECS, Internal Auditor, and Designated Person Ashore (DPA).
During his sailing career, Capt. Kishore served on a wide variety of ships including crude and product tankers, oil ore carriers, chemical tankers, bulk carriers, survey vessels, and MPCC/general cargo ships. His command experience spans five years as Master on Oil and Chemical Tankers and seven years as Chief Officer and Junior Officer, enriched by hands-on exposure to ship surveys, dry-dockings, and vetting inspections.
Transitioning ashore, he dedicated over a decade (2006–2017) to Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies (SIMS), where he served as Senior Lecturer and Rotating Dean of Nautical Studies. At SIMS, he played a pivotal role in establishing simulator-based training for LCHS and ship maneuvering, becoming the institute’s first simulator trainer on ARI software. His responsibilities spanned course development, teaching competence programs, conducting ROC ARPA and ECDIS training, auditing vessels under the ISM code, and mentoring officers for promotion and operational readiness.
From 2017 to 2022, Capt. Kishore was Lecturer and Acting Principal at the Mauritius Maritime Training Academy, where he contributed to academic leadership, curriculum development, and internal audits. He liaised closely with the Ministry of Shipping and oversaw course approvals, vessel inspections, and institutional administration.
Currently, Capt. Kishore continues to shape the next generation of mariners as visiting faculty at leading Indian institutes including SIMS, MTI (SCI), SCMS, Seven Island Marine Training Institute & ISF Maritime & Offshore Institute (IMOI). He also serves as part-time DPA for a shipping company, carrying out audits, seminars and operational consultancy.
An innovator and thought leader, Capt. Kishore has designed specialized equipment such as heating pads for oil tankers, contributed technical articles to reputed publications like MERI Magazine and Tanker Operator (UK), and authored a comprehensive book on chemical tankers with three more works in progress.
His deep technical expertise, academic leadership, and lifelong commitment to maritime safety and training make Capt. Devendra Kishore a respected figure in the global shipping community.
